GTA San Andreas Mission 32: Small Town Bank – Complete Guide

 Introduction

If you have reached Mission #32 in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, you are no longer a simple gangster from Los Santos. You are now a full-fledged criminal working with one of the most unstable characters in video game history – Catalina. Mission 32, titled "Small Town Bank" , is a turning point in the game. It moves away from gang warfare and into organized crime. In this detailed blog post, I will walk you through every step of the mission, share advanced tips, explain the rewards, and give you the lore behind one of the most memorable heists in the early game.

Catalina will call CJ at the Montgomery trailer park. Answer the phone. She will say she is bored. That is your cue to drive to her hideout in Fern Ridge and start the mission.

Where Is the Bank?

The bank is located in Palomino Creek , a small town north of Montgomery and east of the Back o' Beyond forest. Look for the red marker outside the bank building. The bank is a single-story building with a green door and a sign reading "Palomino Creek Bank." You cannot miss it.

Mission Walkthrough – Step by Step

Step 1: The Drive to Palomino Creek

Catalina drives. You cannot control the vehicle during this section. Use the time to prepare mentally. Check your weapons. Ensure you have a powerful firearm (SMG or AK-47) and full body armor. If you do not, cancel the mission and visit Ammu-Nation first.

Step 2: Taking Hostages

Once inside the bank, Catalina pulls her gun. Do not shoot. Walk to the center of the room. A "Panic Meter" appears on screen. The longer you stand near the hostages, the more the meter fills. When it reaches 100%, the hostages are secured. If you shoot anyone, including the tellers, the mission fails. Be patient.

Step 3: Blowing the Safe

After the hostages are controlled, walk to the back of the bank. You will see a large metal safe. Press the action button to plant explosives. A beeping sound starts. Move behind a pillar or desk. The explosion is large and will damage you if you are too close. The blast alerts the police, and a 3-star wanted level begins.

Step 4: Collecting the Cash

The safe door is now open. Inside are several yellow markers. Each marker represents a bag of cash. Walk over every marker. The more bags you collect, the higher your reward. You have limited time before police breach the building. Prioritize speed over accuracy.

Step 5: The Bank Shootout

Police enter through the front door and windows. Take cover behind the teller counters. Catalina will fight beside you. She is aggressive but has low health. Keep enemies away from her. Use headshots to conserve ammo. There are three waves of police:

  • Wave 1: 5 officers with pistols

  • Wave 2: 6 officers with shotguns

  • Wave 3: 4 SWAT officers with SMGs

After the third wave, the entrance is clear. Run outside.

Step 6: The Vehicle Escape

Outside, police cars block the street. Steal any vehicle. A police car works well because it is durable. Catalina will jump into the passenger seat. Drive away immediately. Do not fight the police outside. You are outnumbered.

Step 7: Losing the Wanted Level

You now have a 3-star wanted level. The police will deploy:

  • Roadblocks

  • Spike strips

  • Police helicopters with spotlights

Drive toward Fern Ridge, but avoid main roads. Use the dirt trails through the farmlands. If you see a train tunnel, drive through it. The helicopter cannot follow you inside. Once you are deep in the woods, park the car. Turn off the engine. Wait for the wanted stars to disappear. This takes about 30 seconds if you are hidden.

Step 8: Returning to Catalina’s Hideout

After losing the police, drive to the yellow marker at Catalina’s hideout in Fern Ridge. The mission ends. You receive cash based on how many bags you collected.

Rewards for Completing Small Town Bank

  • Cash: 10,00015,000 (depending on bags collected)

  • Respect: +15% toward your next respect level

  • Weapon skill: Small increase for the weapon used during the shootout

  • Mission unlock: #33 – Robbing Uncle Sam

Advanced Tips for 100% Completion

  • Save before every heist mission. Small Town Bank is not difficult, but random glitches can happen. Always save at the Montgomery safehouse.

  • Upgrade your weapon skill at the shooting range. A higher skill level means less recoil and faster reloads.

  • Use the barn at Fern Ridge to lose wanted stars. Park inside, close the door if possible, and wait.

  • Play the mission during the day. Nighttime makes it harder to see police helicopters.

  • Do not use cheat codes. Cheats like "HESOYAM" (health, armor, money) can lock mission progress. Play legitimately.

Common Glitches and Fixes

  • Catalina does not enter the car: Get out and re-enter the vehicle. Sometimes the AI pathfinding fails.

  • The safe does not explode: This is rare. Reload the save and restart the mission.

  • Police infinite spawn: You must leave the bank area. Police will keep spawning if you stay inside.

  • Mission marker does not appear: Complete all required previous missions. Small Town Bank will not unlock otherwise.

Lore and Story Analysis

Small Town Bank is more than just a robbery. It is a character study of Catalina. She is not robbing the bank for money. She is robbing it because she enjoys chaos. This mission also shows CJ's moral flexibility. He is no longer just protecting Grove Street. He is now a willing participant in violent crime. The mission sets the tone for the rest of the San Fierro and Las Venturas arcs. Without Small Town Bank, CJ never meets The Truth, never goes to San Fierro, and never confronts Tenpenny again.
